What’s your favorite soccer memory?
The 2019 Women’s World Cup. I was in France working at the event and the atmosphere was everything! I got to spend time with colleagues who had supported me through my whole journey, as well as make loads of really meaningful friends. Honestly, I am going to work extremely hard to push for an annual major event for women’s soccer. I mean the NFL has the Pro Bowl, the NBA has the All-Star Game. I’d love the NWSL to have their own All-Star event. These types of events are like a celebration and reunion for the whole community.
Absolutely, I think that the community definitely has the energy for a yearly major event! What do you think is the greatest thing about women’s soccer?
The greatest thing? The talent! Women are stepping onto the field and showing us what they’re made of, often fighting even harder than the men. The opportunity for them to do that is special given the history and struggle women have had to be accepted in these types of spaces.
…and there’s still a long way to go. What inspires you even when things are tough?
My daily journal. I use it to reflect on why I’m doing what I’m doing. When things are challenging and a client thanks me for backing them up every day, it’s the best feeling in the world. Knowing I’ve had an impact on women in this industry inspires me every day to keep going and do even better.
What sports organization doing work for women do you admire most?
This year, the work of the WNBA on and off the court has been amazing! The WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) worked together to dedicate the entire 2020 season to social justice. The associations banded together to create the WNBA/WNBPA Social Justice Council to amplify the movements their athletes believe in. Every game the WNBA played this year honored the Black Lives Matter movement and the #SayHerName campaign. Now that Lisa Baird is Commissioner of the NWSL, I really believe that the league can get on the same level as the WNBA in terms of their advocacy.
Tell us what experiences and strengths brought you to the WIS team?
Well, it’s certainly an experience and a strength to be one of the first African-American women soccer agents. My involvement with MLS and FIFA for sure, but overall it’s gotta be my drive to see women in this sport succeed! It’s so dear to me to ensure that Women in Soccer can help even just one woman along the way.
Oh, we’re going to help so many!
Exactly! And that’s what I shared initially with the WIS team: I’m really passionate about helping to highlight the diverse roles women can have within soccer. Let’s take for example a college student who loves the game but doesn’t want to go professional. Too often, women don’t know that their path to succeeding as a “woman in soccer” can be diverse. There are programming roles, HR positions, technical roles…the list is huge, but we need to let women know there is space and support for them in this industry. Women have so much to give this game, but they just don’t know how to execute that into a career. That’s where WIS comes in.
What makes you excited about WIS?
Oh man, everything! When I think of WIS I think of a void that’s being filled. This network is something that I was yearning for before I even got into the industry. Now, not only is it in existence but it’s something I get to be a part of. I can’t wait to work with more of the people already involved, connect on the actual platform, and enjoy the events. Overall, I’m just ready to really make an impact on all the women who want to thrive in soccer and sports in general.
